This is the correct way of doing an energy-efficient and future-proof extension! We’ve been plagued with cheap plastic conservatories in the UK, and it took us all an embarrassing amount of time to collectively agree that having an uninsulated sun trap is a terrible idea in both summer and winter…
In this case though, balancing the amount of glass area, around a solid and insulated steel structure is a perfect start. Include a subtle solar protective layer on the glass, and the result is a far more sensible and usable room.
To the right hand side of the new sunroom, the secondary extension section features three sections of matching equal width panes: one set of double doors, and one fake door panel.
Tilt and turn windows come in all shapes and sizes. In this case, full length door-height items were required, and STM’s tilt-turn units have conveniently generous manufacturing sizes. And, as you can see, the outer frame sections line up perfectly with the adjacent fixed frames.
The Platinum Grey (RAL7036) colour has a tiniest hint of brown – again, an interesting yet subtle offshoot into the non-standard sections of the RAL Classic chart. We love it, but sadly cannot take credit for it: this was one of many awesome choices from the customer.
All by itself sits a small side-hung window – simple, yet effective. The same RAL7036 colour hides the standard hinges very well, and those standard hinges naturally offer some the best airtight sealing possibilities.
Dual colour doors are always a fun idea: if in doubt, it’s worth at least considering framing a large and solid door leaf in a different colour outer frame. Having vertical grooves inside and out is often worth it too; subtly helping to break up the large panel.
