This project is nearly 5 years old now, so we’re rather lucky to be invited back after that time to take the photos! We were originally contacted by this customer even before our NEC show back in 2018.
Overall, the design aim of the project’s colours and materials is clear to see: cream render walls give way to the stark contrast of dark grey windows, soffits and roof tiles. RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey provides this contrast, and it’s a popular choice! Its popularity means that you can find almost anything in this RAL colour, making it super easy to match different materials.
It’s always worth considering a bifold: most people assume a sliding door will give you much more glass area, but it really depends of the product and the overall size… 74% of this 2.6 by 2m bifold opening is glass. And, of course, you get a far greater overall opening area compared to an in-line slider. Lacuna using thermally-modified timber and multiple runs of rubber seals also means the best possible airtight rating and U values suitable for a Passivhaus project.
Arguably, Rationel Panel doors don’t get the credit they deserve. The overall U-value of 0.62 is incredibly good. Not just compared to UK-made options, but compared to their Danish rivals too. And they tend to work our around the same price. They’re also one of the very few Danish companies who have chosen to undergo the Secure By Design Approval testing.
Rationel FormaPlus in general is the traditional side of their aluminium-clad options. The 45 degree angle on the external cladding just happens to match Lacuna’s styling on the timber bifold. So it’s a very well-matched combination of products. As with every aluminium-clad timber system. It’s clear that a timber window offers the best natural and sustainable insulation, but the reality is that not many people are going to want to maintain and repaint timber windows… The thin aluminium layer solves this problem without compromise .
