We go on about the horrible environmental impact of plastic and why everyone should be looking at timber windows in one form or another. But the overall impact of manufacturing any item means you can’t just take a product at face value and say it’s an environmentally friendly window… Unik Funkis have gone to great lengths to ensure that not just their windows are eco-friendly, but also take great care over their whole production process and even the environmental impact their new windows continue to have after they’ve been installed in your home.
Make your home eco-friendly in the long term
Built in obsolescence is an issue. With many energy-efficient windows designed to look great on paper alongside commercial marketing campaigns, many smaller and more caring companies seem to get lost in all the noise. Is it better to buy a window with a U value at 0.8, replacing in less than 20 years because it’s reached end of life; or buying a window closer to 1.0 that can last over 60 years? We think the latter (equally, we can offer the 60 year lifespan with a 0.8 U value, but you get the point!)
We’ve talked about all the strict timber requirements adhered to by DVV members before, so we won’t go so in-depth again. The key takeaway is that Unik Funkis being part of the Danish Window Verification program means that they’re regularly inspected to make sure they’re producing windows to the highest Danish standard. Part of the requirements is accurately documenting the heat loss characteristics of their products in a way that gives customers complete transparency – it is incredibly easy to compare two DVV-certified products side by side in terms of their performance, making the task of choosing energy-saving solutions very simple.
Energy-saving windows and doors obviously help your bank balance, but the best options also contribute to your general health and wellbeing. Unik Funkis’ products are approved by the Danish Indoor Climate Label: a non-profit organisation who extensively test the chemical compounds emitted from construction products. Ultimately, they’re aiming to promote building practices that are both healthy and sustainable. An approved window has spent 30 days being tested for any harmful emissions from odours to carcinogenics, and this includes any supplementary treatments a customer would be expected to keep on top of after the product leaves the factory (for example: re-oiling an oak frame).
As we say, there’s not point in going to all this trouble if the product is designed to need replacing regularly. An incredibly important area of product design is to ensure a customer receives a quality of timber that will stand the test of time. The 2ØKO system is a detailed set of stages to treat and protect a timber window. Employing multiple layers of water-dilutable wood protection and a fungicide pre-treatment, a 2ØKO prepared timber window is aiming for the best longevity possible. The timber itself is 90% heartwood – far more naturally resistant to moisture so, again, this gives the product you buy a longer serviceable lifespan.

And Unik Funkis don’t just buy this in and blindly go ahead! Dye processes are employed at the very first stage of unpacking a timber shipment to make sure that what they’re being supplied with is up to scratch.
Beyond these, a Unik Funkis window is always engineered and finger-jointed – removing any imperfections that would reduce the life or add unnecessary maintenance to the product. We are fully aware that this removes us as an option for some listed buildings; we feel it’s better to take a step back than to try to promote a product with intentionally poorer quality.

Add the optional aluminium to the exterior of the timber base, and this combination provides the longest possible eco-friendly lifespan with minimal maintenance. The minimal maintenance is also important for the environmental impact because fewer chemicals are required over the years.
What about aluminium? That’s not a renewable material…
True! Aluminium is absolutely not renewable, but it is happily recyclable.
One of the worst areas of aluminium is the CO2 produced by processing plants… According to both EPD Norway and the European Aluminium Association, every kilogram of aluminium produced will create 10-11 kg of CO2 on average. This is why Unik Funkis have teamed up with AluPlanet and AlumEco – to get on board with their far more environmentally friendly aluminium production. The aluminium on the face of Unik’s composite products is produced from scrap material, entirely with renewable energy and with a hugely reduced footprint of 2.04 kg of CO2 for every kg of aluminium.
Nordic Swan Ecolabel
If you’ve read this far, thank you! It’s worth it, because we’ve done the opposite of what we arguably should have done on a long internet read: saved the most impressive for last.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabelnordic-swan-ecolabel.org is reserved for an elite set of companies in a wide range of industries. The DVV’s quality criteria spans across 165 pages for window and doors. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel adds another 47 pages to cover a products’ environmental and climate impact across their whole lifecycle. They’re not only considering the impact made by production, but the impact a product a product has whilst in the ownership of the customer.
Sadly, there’s far too much criteria to really discuss here, but all can be boiled down to strictly proving a product is energy efficient with a low climate impact across a long service life, contributing to circular economy (recycling and managing waste correctly).
In terms of data, material quality and testing, we think the highlights are:
- Overall Uw value must be at most 0.84
- Daylight transmission through the glass must be at least 63%
- Airtightness must be the best possible Class 4
- Watertightness must be the best possible Class 9A
- Doors must undergo a separate behaviour test between two different climates
- Plastic is simply not allowed to be a primary material – no more than 10% of the weight without glass can be plastic, rubber, composites…essentially anything that’s not sustainable
- Timber must be FSC or PEFC certified with a fully traceable chain
- 75% of aluminium used must be recycled, from a low climate-affecting plant
- Krypton and xenon are not allowed to be used in glass units due to their high energy usage in production
- Low VOC surface treatments must be used – not exceeding 60mg C/Nm3 (a measure of airborne pollutants)
And when a factory provides all those values, each one must be determined or reviewed by an accredited 3rd party in order for Nordic Swan to accept it.
All in all: this is a level way above UK building regulations and seriously impressive achievement for Unik Funkis to be an approved supplier.
