Wood Stains for Windows

Wood stains are a colouring product that is used on timber windows and doors. They imitate the look of other wood species so are a great option if you have a specific vision of what you want your windows to look like. By using Nordic Pine (a dense softwood), we are able to achieve the bespoke look of materials such as oak with the same level of quality, better insulation and a more affordable price point. For details on how this could be implemented into your property, please feel free to contact us.

Stained Timber Windows

Across our timber window and door product range, the majority of windows and doors come with the option of being stained. This includes all STM, Vrogum and Unik Funkis products. This gives a wide range of choice depending on your desired look, without having to compromise on high insulation and general quality.

These are the stain options that we offer but please note, the stains shown should not be used in place of an official sample. We cannot guarantee colour accuracy when viewed on a screen or printed out. Please contact us to see the official samples in person.

The Wood Staining Process

This high standard of product is achieved using a ‘three step process’. The first stage involves putting down a translucent base coat to prime the wood. This stops the growth of fungus spores within the wood which helps to increase the lifespan and reduce the amount of trapped moisture. Next, the stain of your choice is applied to coat these points. Finally, the same stain colour is applied again. By applying two layers of the stain, we ensure that the wood is evenly coated in the stain of your choice.

This carefully-designed Leicestershire new build opted for the STM Tinium windows with an internal oak stain.

Advantages of Wood Stains

The main advantage of using a stain is the appearance on the frames as it can be customised to suit your property, without the same upfront cost of oak. It can be used in both the inside and outside of the window or door. It is also lower maintenance than using other timber species as it does not need regular oiling.

Disadvantages of Wood Stains

However, there are some drawbacks to consider before deciding on using a stain. Due to the highly technical three step process used to treat the wood, it is more expensive than if you opted for a paint finish (although it is not as expensive as using oak so if you are set on the natural timber look, this may still be an option for you).

Furthermore, we use finger jointed timber as shown in the photo on the left. When you apply a stain all factory machine marks will be visible. Therefore, if this will bother you, wood stains are probably not the option for you.
Also, the colour may fade quicker than paint would as it will react quicker with the UV from the sun. After considering all this, you may want to look into alternatives to woodstains on timber windows and doors.

Now you’ve got an idea of your internal colour, how about external?

We recommend using only paint, because the exterior finish is exposed to a harsher environment. Feel free to contact us or book a virtual appointment regarding interior wood stains as well as advice for external finishes.
