Our favourite work-based activity: making a pretty Cotswold home even more pretty, whilst bringing insulation levels way beyond modern building regulations.

As with most Cotswold properties, Pebble Grey and a single horizontal decorative bar are the key items to allow a modern window look at home in this traditional setting. Even with the STM Tinium‘s Danish origin, triple glazing and low-maintenance aluminium exterior, the faux-timber details and low-gloss paint blend happily into the British countryside.

Surrounding the window, we choose to maintain tradition further by pointing-in the frames. Unlike traditional pointing though, we still have our airtight seal hidden behind. So our Class 4 airtight windows are complemented by our airtight insulation.

When ordering entrance doors, it normally makes sense to go for the same product as the windows. Here, we have aluminium-clad timber door frames, foam-filled insulated panels and both toughened and laminated glass. STM’s locks are some of the most secure we offer; requiring a unique 6-digit code in order to create any key copies.

As with all our super thin glazing bars, these have not created nine individual glass panes. The upper half of the door is still just one glass unit, separated by fake spacer bars. Conservation officers often frown upon this. However, having sent out a sample, it took a couple of emails and a phone call to convince them that they were actually fake…

Note the cable running past the side of the frame in the top right corner: you’ll see cables being drilled through old timber window frames all the time; we don’t do that with our windows. A factory-recommended tolerance gap from Denmark is very convenient to route cables in a way that doesn’t damage the frame at all. Please let us know if you’re mounting a external security system as part of your upgrade – it’ll be much easier to plan out your cable routes during our survey before we install new windows and doors.

In a weird way, we’re very happy when our windows are not the centre piece. There are a lot of homes and a lot of areas in the country where windows simply should not stand out. By aiming towards a subtle and understated specification such as this, you receive all the benefits with zero risk or drawbacks.
