Our windows and doors were looking old and shabby, and needed replacing. We had always wanted continental windows, as we had both lived in Germany in the 70s and 80s, but when we last had to replace the windows in 2007 we couldn’t find a UK firm who imported continental windows, and we ended up with uPVC, which proved to be a mistake and were a disappointment.
This time I found Enlightened Windows. From start to finish nothing was too much for Chris and Roald; everything was explained beforehand and advice was always just an email or phone call away – and the phone and emails were always answered without delay. Any problems with the manufacturer (we chose Danish windows) were quickly resolved (we only had one small problem which was quickly sorted out by Chris) and installation was a dream. Richard, and the two James’s, always arrived on time, and cleaned and tidied up after each room was completed. I really couldn’t have asked for more.
If you want continental windows, then I have no hesitation in recommending Enlightened Windows.

I cannot recommend Enlighten windows highly enough. Every part of my dealing with them was outstanding. Their technical knowledge and advice was excellent, it is quite rare to find people who have a really, really good understanding of their product, and they do. I write this having just had an after sale question, which they have sorted out perfectly.
We purchased Unik Funkis windows and they are beautifully made. From my research last year these windows were comparable or slightly cheaper than others of similar type I looked at , and they have a U – value very much better than that specified by current UK building regulations. Enlighten deal with many manufacturers.
Communication throughout the process was great, and they were spot on with their lead time management.

Having had two sets of windows fail over a 30 year period because of our exposed location [first soft wood and then hard], we looked long and hard for what we hoped would be the best long term replacement. After much searching, we found Enlightened Windows, who supplied and fitted a complete set of Unik Funkis windows in the autumn and it is not possible for us to praise them highly enough. From the first phone call to Chris followed by a visit to their HQ where he and Roald spent time explaining in detail the intricate design and build of these windows; they were clearly an extremely knowledgeable, patient and helpful team. We were then shown examples of work they had undertaken in the area and were given time to speak to these previous clients whom were glowing in their praise. During the process of procurement, we had two visits for measuring up to ensure everything was in order and Roald proved endlessly patient in checking and rechecking all our specific requirements; nothing seemed to be too much trouble for him to sort. It was soon clear that Chris had a very good working relationship with the factory in Denmark and once dates for fitting were agreed, everything was delivered on time without any hassle. The fitting team headed up by Richard were fantastic; their skill, care and meticulous attention to detail ensured it was a very straightforward process and, once fitted, it was almost impossible to tell that all the windows had been replaced, apart from the fact that we had beautiful new windows which drew very positive comments and enquires from neighbours and friends. Further, rooms which previously had obvious drafts are now draft free and warmer! Storm Darragh proved a good test for them and they passed with flying colours! The help, guidance and attention to detail that Chris, Roald and Richard delivered was exceptional and the result is wonderful. In this day and age when so often quality products and good customer service seems wanting, Chris and his team at Enlightened Windows have shown that some companies still pride themselves in delivering excellence; we cannot recommend them highly enough.

From the start Chris, Roald and the team were fantastic. I have been in the construction industry for 20 years and it’s rare to receive such an impressive service; especially from a window supplier. We own a grade 2 listed cottage with a challenging local authority conservation team. We had windows and doors for an extension that needed design approval as well as windows and doors for the main Cottage that needed listed building consent. Throughout the arduous planning process Chris and Roald were always on hand to offer solutions, detail drawings and anything necessary to help with the process. Once permission was obtained they worked as hard as they could to work to my installation deadlines despite the post brexit chaos. When the windows arrived the quality surpassed our expectations. They look amazing and perfectly suited to a three hundred year old cottage. We are now expecting our second delivery and when we have the energy for the final application to replace our remaining windows we won’t hesitate to use Enlightened Windows again. I would recommend Chris and the team to everyone from contractors all the way through to customers who might feel daunted by the task of replacing their windows or doors. Enlightened Windows will take you through the whole process with honesty, integrity and overall a fantastic product.

Attempting your first self build you need a good team around you and I count myself lucky to have found Chris and his team at Enlightened Windows. I am probably one of the slowest builds ever but throughout it Chris and his team have worked with me to find the best solution whether that be patio sliders, bi-folds that offer both longevity and the best thermal performance or a bespoke solution for the glazed gable end. They have not shied away from telling me when they think something won’t work and when things have gone awry (the first patio sliders had a manufacturing issue) they were immediately onto the manufacturer arranging a replacement. Half the key to success is the install and here again the team is great. All in all, they are friendly, approachable, arrive when they say they will and knowing that the glazing is in a safe pair of hands leaves you free to finish the rest of the build.

We were looking for two replacement front doors to a bespoke design and of high quality. Enlightened Windows offered precisely what we were looking for; the ability to build a door to our own design and include excellent levels of security. The team who installed both doors were also excellent. Very knowledgable, professional and knew precisely how to deal with fitting a new door to the peculiarities of an older house. No hard sell from Enlightened Windows, just good, honest advice. Initially, we had three large triple glazed, wooden framed windows replaced by STM of Denmark, which closely resembled the appearance of the originals. We were exceptionally pleased with how much skill & care was taken by the installers, leaving us no mess.
A couple of years on, we were going through the process of moving house when we were broken into. A large kitchen window was wrenched from its mounting. Chris Newby, MD of Enlightened Windows, came to our rescue & promptly ordered a replacement from Denmark. The necessarily long lead-in time meant that when it was delivered the new owners were in occupancy. It was difficult to fit because of the internal Corian type cill butted up against the window frame, so great care had to be taken.
On both occasions we were kept very well informed as to the progress of the orders & fitting. Needless to say, it is important to double-check the complete specification to ensure that no errors creep in, before finalising the order.
The STM windows Enlightened Windows supply are of the highest quality & are thus not cheap but the service of all concerned cannot be faulted, thus we highly recommend the company.

Building a new house while caring for two infants has been challenging, and when the time came to find windows, I felt dejected, because I did not want cheap plastic windows, and did not want to talk to a typical window salesman.
Our new build is (almost) a ‘passive house’ so we needed windows that will harmonise with the integrity of the insulation and soundproofing of the building.
Chris replied to my email with a telephone call and we talked for a long time. He came with Enlightened Windows’ mobile showroom and patiently (while I juggled two toddlers!) showed us the windows they have on offer.
We decided on Unik Funkis premium triple glazed composite windows. Unlike other window salesmen that we met with, Chris was 100% NOT pushy, and is just a very genuine person. Everyone we dealt with in the company was extremely polite, prompt and helpful. Every step of the way we have received nothing but care.
After taking care checking measurements and our specifications, we put in our order and they were delivered exactly when we wanted by their also extremely polite and courteous delivery man, and Chris contacted us to check we were happy.
We are so delighted with Enlightened Windows. Thank you so much!

It’s rare to find a company as good as this. The first part of the window replacement process was to find a company. A large national company was tempting because it offered a large, skilled workforce for the installation to be completed in a timely manner and large turnover to offer good prices. However, friends who chose this option tell me of the indifference of the workers, poor standards and unfinished work which discouraged me. I turned to the Which Guide to choose a local company with good reviews, permanent employees and a reputation for doing the right thing. Next, was to choose a decent product. Of the three companies I chose, one was significantly cheaper (white PVC) and one much more expensive (timber) than Enlightened Windows (aluminium clad timber). As the work progressed, and issues arose it was reassuring to know we had chosen the right company.
1. High Quality product
Offering good thermal properties through the aluminium externally clad, high wood density frame and the double glazing, the windows should not require annual painting and save on heating costs. Replacing the several panes for some of the windows with one pane makes some windows feel that much wider and the house bigger. We selected an opening system to allow the upstairs windows to be cleaned from inside the property, thus removing the need to be outside, up a ladder; safer and more convenient.
2. Professional workers
The Enlightened fitters’ work was of a high standard. They also returned to fix some small issues we found weeks after the installation such as mismatched colour filling, and rough window boards.
3. Uncovered long standing issues we were unaware of – rotting window frames, faulty lead roofing.
Some of the work had to be postponed when Enlightened exposed a number of original building faults never resolved by the previous owners because they were not aware – the original builder didn’t use enough lead flashing leading to water ingress in several areas! Independently finding a roofer to fix these issues proved to be difficult: they didn’t keep appointments, didn’t follow through with a quote or were just not available for several months. Fortunately, Enlightened recommended a roofer who provided quality work, reasonable prices and managed to squeeze my small but essential jobs in between others. Was this luck? No, it was finding the right company in the first place.
4. Working in bad weather to make it watertight
Some work was done to make the windows watertight even when the weather was atrocious. This was exceptional.
5. Colour advice and references for previous work
Enlightened’s colour advice transformed our original choice into something special. We originally wanted white frames but the pebble grey/cotswold green finally selected compliments the whole house.
6. Good timekeeping – Rapid installation – due to other works there was a limited installation time but Enlightened ramped up their workforce and completed the work twice as fast as expected without comprising the installation quality, which was self-evident.
7. Cost. It is an expensive product compared with alternatives, but the benefits justify the cost.
8. Measuring and ordering mistakes resulted in installation delays – we are all human and we all make mistakes, but the difference with this company is how they resolve issues. Instead of walking away, Enlightened continued until it was fixed. So many companies in the past have left me with a mess, but not this time. If only everyone worked like this.
In summary, if you choose Enlightened Windows you are really in safe hands and quite a special product.

More to the point they have carefully installed super windows. We are very pleased and had no trouble working with these guys at all. If you’re after the Danish style, look no further.
** Edit: just coming back a few months later to add that aftercare has also been great, one of our windows dropped and Chris has someone here to fix it less than 24 hours after I contacted him. Fantastic service once again and we continue to feel very well cared for. Attention to detail, no trouble returning until everything is just right. Thanks again Chris and all!
